Kazumi Dojo
About Kazumi Dojo
“Karate-Do Kazumi Dojo” is a martial arts dojo established to convey the ideal form of karate envisioned by the karateka, Hajime Kazumi. The guiding philosophy of the dojo is to instill courage, strength to overcome all challenges, and kindness towards others, emphasizing the development of self.
Currently, there are six branches of the dojo in Japan, where numerous students are being instructed. In addition to mentoring the next generation, instructors are continuously honing their skills to support both Hajime Kazumi and the dojo.
Furthermore, Hajime Kazumi has founded the Kazumi Karate International Association (KKIA) to promote his vision of karate on an international level.
The philosophy of Kazumi Dojo
Overcome oneself
In life, one encounters numerous challenges, and at Sumi Dojo, the goal is to nurture individuals who can overcome these difficulties. This strength is about triumphing over oneself, not defeating others. It’s important not to misunderstand that the purpose is to triumph over others in karate.
The aim is to polish oneself mentally and physically, using it as a source of confidence. The hope is to guide individuals to become capable of facing any challenge by cultivating themselves in this way.
Begins with respect and Ends with respect
Respecting and valuing etiquette is a fundamental principle in the traditional spirit of Japanese martial arts. One cannot become strong on their own. By practicing and striving together with fellow practitioners, both the opponent and oneself are refined.
There is no place for karate that insults the opponent. It is approached with gratitude and respect. Etiquette is not neglected at the beginning or end of training, and even when entering or leaving the dojo. This applies to young children who are members of the dojo as well. Karate at Sumi Dojo teaches respect for the opponent from the very beginning.
Welcome to our website to visitors from overseas
For those who have visited our dojo from overseas, we receive numerous emails. Among them, the most common questions are:
- ‘I would like to join your organization (Sumi Dojo), what should I do?’
- ‘I am planning to visit Japan, can I participate in training with Master Kazumi?’
Here, we will address these two questions. For any other inquiries, we have compiled a Q&A section, so please check to see if your questions are already answered before reaching out.”
Q: If I am interested in joining your organization?
“First and foremost, it’s important to clarify that our style of karate is not a full-contact, intense form like some other schools. Instead, it embodies the martial arts traditions rooted in ancient Okinawan karate. We place a strong emphasis on kata (forms) and etiquette, pursuing karate as a martial art focused on overcoming oneself rather than winning competitions against others. We do not prioritize methods such as completing 100-person sparring or winning tournaments. If you are considering joining Kazumi Dojo with the expectation of such methods, it may not lead to mutually beneficial results.
With the above in mind, if you are interested in learning the principles of Kazumi Dojo, we are committed to supporting you until you have mastered them. However, please be aware that there may be differences in basics, forms, and greetings compared to what you have learned in other karate styles, and mastering these may take a considerable amount of time. The first step is to come to Japan to learn the doctrines of Kazumi Dojo.”
“On the other hand, we have established the Kazumi Karate International Association (KKIA), an international federation. If individuals share our philosophy and values, they can join the association regardless of the differences in organization names or teaching methods. While we may not provide the Sumi Dojo brand, we believe in fostering mutual exchange and building positive relationships. To join, it is essential to understand each other’s philosophies and values. Please contact us through the email form below for further information.”
Q: I’m going to Japan, is it possible to participate in training with Master Kazumi?
“Yes. It doesn’t matter which style you have studied in the past or currently practice. Anyone with an open-minded attitude to learn our principles is welcome to join.
The table below shows the schedule for ‘Kancho Keiko’ (Training with the Head Instructor) conducted by Director Kazumi. First, let us know when you will be in Japan through the email form below.
